CHEMICAL PEELS
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a solution that is applied on your face, hands or neck to treat damaged skin and improve the appearance of scars.
There are different types of chemical peels, namely:
- Superficial peels
These are exfoliating peels which use mild acids to gently exfoliate your skin. They only penetrate the outermost layer of your skin. - Medium peels
These are used to effectively remove damaged skin cells. They penetrate the middle and outer layer of your skin. - Deep peels
These are used to remove damaged skin cells. They fully penetrate the middle layer of your skin.
When are chemical peels used?
Chemical peels are used to treat several conditions, such as:
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Sun damage
- Acne scars
- Hyperpigmentation
- Scars
- Melasma
- Uneven skin tone
How are chemical peels applied?
During the procedure, Dr Ndongeni will apply a chemical solution on the area that is being treated, such as the face, hands or the neck. Your skin will whiten and the new skin underneath will be smoother, appear less wrinkled and may have less damage.
What can you expect after the procedure?
After a chemical peel procedure, you may experience the following:
- Superficial peel
Your skin may be temporarily lighter or darker. - Medium peel
Your skin may swell up and form a crust and brown blotches before it reveals the new skin. - Deep peel
Your skin may swell up, and it may take approximately two weeks for your new skin to develop.
During recovery, Dr Ndongeni will instruct you on how often should you wash and moisturize your face and which products you should use. Avoid being in contact with the sun and using makeup or other cosmetics until the dermatologist gives you the go-ahead.
How do I determine which chemical peel is best for me?
The type of chemical peel depends on several factors, including your individual skin concerns, your unique skin type, and your desired outcome.
Skin reacts differently to different treatments, but the side effects of chemical peels should be minor in most cases.
A complete facial chemical peel may take up to 90 minutes.
Recovery should take up to two weeks to complete.
