MICRONEEDLING

What is micro-needling?

Micro-needling is a procedure where the dermatologist uses multiple small sterile needles to puncture the skin to treat different skin conditions. It helps increase the production of collagen and other healing factors by causing trauma to the skin. Collagen is an essential protein which helps the skin’s texture remain firm, smooth and stretchy, and also look youthful.

When is micro-needling used?

Micro-needling is used to treat or address skin-related complaints such as:

  • Wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Scars
  • Skin pigmentation issues such as hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Rosacea
  • Loose skin such as after weight loss or liposuction
  • Age spots
  • Large pores

Micro-needling may also be used to inject or deposit medication such as topical tretinoin or vitamin C, into the skin.

How is micro-needling done?

During the procedure, Dr Ndongeni will inject topical anaesthetic on your face so that you don't feel any pain. He will then use a pen-like tool to make small pricks under your skin. He will move the tool across your skin to ensure that the new skin is even when it rejuvenates. The dermatologist will then apply a serum or calming treatment on your face.

What can you expect after the procedure?

After the procedure, your skin may be red and irritated for a few days due to the small injuries made by the needles. You may also go back to school or work after the procedure if you feel comfortable enough. Your skin will be sensitive to the sun; therefore, you must try to avoid being in contact with the sun or apply sunblock.

It will take a few weeks for your skin to rejuvenate new skin tissues and to maintain the results of your treatment; you may need more sessions or other complementing treatments. Dr Ndongeni will advise on the best plan based on your individual skin goals.
